SF Mayoral Election, Round 1

Posted by Mike on November 11, 2011 in Politics

One-hundred percent of precincts have reported in. Incumbent candidate Ed Lee has taken an early 13-point lead with 31.4% of the vote. Next-highest candidate is John Avalos, at 18.7% of the vote. Ed Lee needs to win 25.5% of the remaining ballots to win. John Avalos needs to win 62.7% of remaining ballots to win. No one will be pronounced winner of the election until he or she has 50%+1 of the vote. After each round, if no candidate has met the threshold to win, the bottom candidate will drop off the list, and the next choice on those ballots will be counted. This is repeated until there

No, it wasn’t 100,000 people — stop devaluing the movement

Posted by Mike on November 11, 2011 in Politics

Shame on you Zennie Abraham and shame on you Veterans Today for reducing the movement to the same tactics our deriders use. Your wild statements have demeaned the dignity of Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Oakland. In case you missed it, an article widely read on Veterans Today, originally written by Zennie Abraham, claimed that over 100,000 people were at the Oakland General Strike, instead of the 7,000 some media outlets claimed. As 'proof', you cited that people were continually moving in and out of the square that, during another rally, held 18,000 people. Specifically you stated that: W

Switching banks did a lot more than you think

Posted by Mike on November 11, 2011 in Politics

The month prior to Bank Transfer Day saw over 650,000 people switch to a Credit Union, moving over $4.5billion. Statistics for the day aren't fully available yet, but estimates are looking up. This is absolutely fantastic. Astoundingly, wonderfully, amazingly fantastic. Congratulations to everyone who moved their money, to everyone who is in the process of moving their money, or those who are planning to do so in the near future (and if you haven't yet, consider it, there are a lot of reasons for switching to a Credit Union). The movement of money is not just a powerfully symbolic stateme

That Mask makes you look stupid, Anonymous

Posted by Mike on November 11, 2011 in Politics

I've never understood your fascination with the Guy Fawkes mask. It's a commercialized mask trademarked by a multi-billion dollar company that represents a man who was a religious nutjob known for his extremist views. "Remember, remember" you chant, blithe to the irony of your ignorance. You've forgotten (or perhaps have never known) what, exactly, the Fifth of November was about. Perhaps it's time to find a new face for your movement. Let me explain why: Who was Guy Fawkes? Guy Fawkes, or Guido Fawkes as he named himself while he was fighting for Catholic Spain, was a devout anti-Protes

Why should I switch to a Credit Union?

Posted by Mike on October 10, 2011 in Politics

With the November 5th Bank Transfer Day coming around the corner soon, a lot of people are wondering what the differences between a Bank and a Credit Union are -- and why many people are advocating moving money to the latter. The reasoning is simple, and whether you agree with Occupy Wall Street or not, I have no doubt you'll be seriously considering switching. So what exactly is a Credit Union? A Credit Union is an instution that works in a very similar manner to a bank. You open an account, they give you checks, a debit card, a credit card if you apply for one. They have branches and ATMs

Apathy and the American Autumn

Posted by Mike on October 10, 2011 in Politics

How dare people say the movement of Occupy Wall Street is just some rabble of unemployed youth whining about their circumstances. How dare people retort that they simply 'try harder' to get by in life. How dare people like Bill O'Reilly describe these protesters as lazy and unmotivated to find jobs. This protest is not about a lack of jobs, the lack of fairness, the lack of transparency or accountability -- this protest is about the entire system being broken. This protest is about the fact that both Republicans and Democrats seem hellbent on perpetuating the notion that the only good economy

Something is Rotten

Posted by Mike on September 09, 2011 in Politics

Something is rotten in the States United. Each day brings news of increased brutality towards protesters on Wall Street; protestors angry at the growing inequality of both resources and fairness. These protestors are frustrated that not a single person responsible for the near-collapse of the global economy has been put to trial or arrested. Not a single person who profited off the destruction of the livelyhoods of millions of Americans and millions more around the world has had to pay for their actions. Executives at Goldman Sachs walked away with $20 billion after helping to manufacture -

Occupy Wallstreet Announces Grievances

Posted by Mike on September 09, 2011 in Politics

OUR GRIEVANCES Campaign Finance Reform All votes are no longer equal in our Democracy. Money must be put outside of politics, or politicians will continue to pander to those who contribute the most to their campaigns, rather than their own constituencies. Specifically, we abhor the decision by the Supreme Court in Citizens United v. FEC. Corporations are NOT people. True Shared Sacrifice While corporate profits have been skyrocketing and the wealthy have been getting wealthier, the average worker’s income has dramatically dropped. While the cost of living has exponentially
